My daughter is almost 8 months old and seems to be weaning herself (sometimes only nurses for a minute at a time). I've tried nursing her in a quiet area but she wants to be active and see what is going on. She refuses to take a bottle or a cup and I'm afraid she may become dehydrated. The only time she really seems to get a good feeding is once in the middle of the night. Any suggestions on how to get her to take a cup - I've tried several different types of cups and also several different bottles and nipples.

Is she still have lots of wet diapers? That way you know if she is getting enough. My dd was horrible going from breast to bottle and infact never did take a bottle so we tried sippy cups. We tried many different cups with different tops. Finally when she did take it, her milk had to be in one colour and her water in another. We just always had it available for her and tried showing her how it worked. You might try removing the valve so she doesn't have to suck on it as hard. Basically persistance paid off for us.

Hi: Thanks for the suggestions! Her diapers are wet but definitely not as wet as before. I did get her to take a bit from a bottle today (slow process though) so I'll keep trying. I'll keep offering different sippie cups as well. She is still nursing a bit too but mostly in the middle of the night. I've been really watering down her cereal as well so hopefully she'll get enough liquids (she's been having problems with constipation too). My son would take bottle or breast without a fuss at all so this is all new to me!

Any chance your baby could be teething? Babies tend to unlatch because of the extra pressure on the gums which is the same with any sucking motion, sippy cup, bottle etc. Maybe try feeding with a regular cup???
Good luck.

Hi: Yes, she is definitely teething! Four teeth coming in at once on the top so I'm sure that didn't help with the weaning to a bottle (just wanted to chew on it). But there is good news! She has taken a bottle every day for the past week!
Not sure why she takes it now as I really didn't do anything different but she has gotten the hang of it. I only have to nurse her in the morning and before bed so there is light at the end of the tunnel. I know I'll miss nursing her when it is all over as I enjoyed being that close to her, but it sure will be nice to get out of the house for more than a couple hours! I feel like a prisoner about to get paroled!
Just kidding - nursing was an amazing experience for me!
