Does anyone know if Kumon or any of the other programs offer help for French? My son is going into French Immersion for the first time next year. I speak une petite peu but not enough to really help him. Any suggestions? We're in Toronto.

I don't know whether Kumon is good, for we haven't tried it before. But I strongly recommend Beestar.org.

It is a website full of free math practice, English programs, social studies and Gifted & Talented programs. My little James started school last year, but he really hated the boring math. Then his teacher recommended Beestar to us. He began to like doing the weekly math practice, because there are interesting stories and vivid pictures for kids. He also likes checking the honor roll every week, and he is so happy when his name appears. Registering as parent, I can receive the Email from beestar every week to notice me how James was doing in beestar. I am considering registering other programs for him.

My neice did the Kumon. It isn't an alternative to regular education. It is in addition to. It teaches them a regimen of learning. I believe in it although I have never used them myself, for my kids that is.

What they do is teach in a classroom setting using worksheets that are specific to the learning ability of the child. Not the age or the grade. They test your child first to find out where he/she is on the learning continuum and then start the child off there. There is work every day. For 2 nights or days per week the child attends the "classroom" setting for one hour. That is where his/her work is calculated and monitored. Most of the work is done at home and then marked by you or hubby. They give you worksheets, I think for the month, and when they attend the classroom they just do the worksheet for that day. It is a good way to teach a disciplined work ethic, I think.

For my neice, she absolutely hated it. Everyday, all summer, weekends, holidays she had to do a worksheet. It doesn't take long but she is not a scholar and it wasn't hard to do but it was hard for her to focus. She did the Kumon for about 2 years. I honestly think it helped her. She couldn't do multiplication at the age of 9 and now she can. She has the learning disability of CAPD. I think Kumon helped her.

I've seen a few ads for Kumon schooling and am wondering if any one has their kids in it. I haven't had the chance to check it out online to see what it is all about but plan on trying to get some info about it tonight. Have your kids had any success with it more then in the normal school ciriculum?
