My fiance` and I are going shopping on Wednesday and we're absolutely baffled as to what we should buy our son for toys. Neither of us have really been around babies, so we don't have any experiences or people to reference. As of now, our boy has NO toys with the exception of a few stuffies (that he can't play with as he's still too young).

I remember sort of looking in walmart at those mat-thingys with the hanging toys......would they be a good option or should we opt for something different?

If anyone can let me know what type of toy to buy I would be forever grateful. I would prefer toys that encourage mental stimulation.

Product names and prices would also be appreciated.

Do babies even play at this point or am I just jumping the gun here?

Thanks so much for your reply!

Awake at night

My daughter is 9 months old, she has been sleeping the night since she was 7 weeks old. We have a balcony but it's definitely not baby secure. I'm worried with a little one coming about it's safety. It has about 10 cm gaps between each pole. It's not dangerous for adults, but could definitely be a problem with a baby.

Is there any way to baby proof a balcony? I'm tempted to just leave the balcony shut permanently once she/he is born.

Thanks!

Random questions

Hello everyone! I am new to this board. I have a month old daughter and I am first time parent so have lots of questions. Here goes:

1) What is normal vomiting for my baby. She vomits every other day. Vomit is not projectile but soft and is generally less than what she ate. Is this normal.

2) Her stomach seems to appear larger than her hip/butt area.

3) She has lots of hair on her back .. will this fall off?

4) Feeding question. We give her express milk via a bottle. We were told that once she starts feeding from a bottle you can use that bottle for only an hour. She snacks and sleeps a lot so we end up wasting a lot of precious express milk though we try to put little quantities in a bottle.

is it bad

is it bad to be teen parents? i am 17 and my common-law is 19 and we have a beutiful 8 month old son.

Getting baby to sleep in crib.

Does anyone have any advice or ideas that might incurage my baby to sleep in her crib. It's kind of a problem because when mommy has to go out, and daddy (me) has to be the sole care giver, she cries out a river. This crying lasts a long time and has been known to last until mommy comes home.

I'm not so much bothered by this personally as I've heard it's normal, but it would be great if we could get her to feel that the world's not going to fall apart if mommy leaves the room or house.

Is there anything we can try?

teen parents

our family

Naomi,Dawn,Kanayok,Hikoalok

William,Brent,Jules,Koaha,Kakolak

Keithallen,Brett,Nicoli,Niptanatiak,Hikoalok

if you

are wondering about the names that are underlined they are our inuit names we are from Nunavut and it is a tradition in our hometown.

baby not going back to sleep

Hello,
My wife and I have a darling little 10 month old girl. We're trying to ween her off the multiple breast feedings at night as we're told that once she's eating solids, she shouldn't have to wake up several times a night to feed. We've managed to do this somewhat successfully - she's sleeping through the night now - but she still gets up really early (between 4:00 and 5:00 in the morning). We figure that by this time, she probably is hungry, so we're OK with breast feeding her.

The real problem is that whereas she would wake up several times a night before, get breast fed, and then go right back to sleep, now she gets breast fed and doesn't go back to sleep. If we leave her in her crib, she cries to no end (intense crying). The only way to get her to stop is to bring her into bed with us (and even then she takes a while to calm down).

Is there anything we can do to stop this?

foods during pregnancy

Is chocolate safe to eat ?

What other foods during pregnacy are not good to eat?

pregnacy

My name is Megan and I am going to be a first time parent on november 20th and I was hopeing to look for advice on pregnancy. We hold her and give attention but when we put her down she screams. She wont sleep because she wants to be held and we don't know what to do. When she goes to her grandmas or we have people over when they leave or bring her home she is even worse than normal. I am sooo tired sometimes i have to put her in her car seat just so she sleeps or stops crying so i can shower, clean the house or take a nap. We have tried so many things but nothing works. If we swaddle her she gets even more angry because she hates blankets on her and will kick and wiggle until they are off. We have been told to let her cry and eventually she will fall asleep and stop wanting to be held all the time. We tried the last 2 nights and she screamed from 12am to 5 am. She would fall asleep for a half hour and then wake up crying again. At 5 i was so tired i gave up and put her in her car seat. I hate hearing her cry and i am worried it wont work and she will think we don't love her or she is too young to just let her cry.

Infant Seat - Rear facing

OK guys, here is the question, I have a big bay who is well over the 20 pounds mark and is going to be going into a rear facing car seat, but what I want to know is what is the height and weight that the baby needs to meet to go forward facing? We noticed that when we try to let her sleep without swaddling her, that the lenght of sleep is way shorter. Obviously we'll have to stop swaddling eventually as she gets older. We use the ready made swaddling blanket with velcro so it's nice and tight for her. How old before we need to stop swaddling? Also does anyone have any suggestions on how to get her to sleep without swaddling her but keep her sleeping through the night?

She doesnt want to Immunize??

Hi there....I hope I'm putting this in the right section. My daughter is a month old and I have had numerous conversations about immunization for the baby. She doesn't want to immunize her and I just cant understand why not..?? does anybody have any thoughts about this? I KNOW it can be a very debatable conversation but I just don't see why you would want to take that kind of risk...Help please!!

What kind of feeding schedual do you use at 6-7 months?

DS is now 7 months and we've been doing solids for a month now. The pooping hasn't improved much so we're going to the doc about that next week however my question now is...

What kind of feeding schedule do you use? I can't remember what I did 4+ years ago for my first DS. Right now, this is what I'm doing...

7am bottle

9am Nap

10:30am cereal and fruit

12:30pm bottle

1:00pm Nap

3:30pm bottle

6pm cereal and veggies

9pm bottle

I don't know where to go from here?? Do I introduce lunch? Should I be giving him cereal at each meal? Should I be mixing the fruit/veggies with the cereal or serving it seperate? Why can't I remember any of this??? Help! Now that my daughter is three months old I have decided that i won't be going into her room when she wakes up in the middle of the night. Do you think it is a good idea to keep her mobile in the crib so she can look at it when she wakes up in the middle of the night? It does make her very happy but LOUD. Or should i take it out?

Started solids and stopped pooing!

I recently started my son on solids, Rice Cereal and then Barley, and he hasn't pooed well for a week now. Now I don't want to be graphic here but it much resembles a cork in a wine bottle and there's a lot of crying and discomfort trying to work it out. I know rice is a "bülk up" food but when baby can't have other things like fruit or prune juice yet, what do I do to help him loosen up??? We are starting veggies today...will that help?

going crazy

I noticed now that winter is here, i am feeling cooped up being inside. I just want to go outside for fresh air or a walk. I sort of feel out of the loop as well being home everyday a person looses touch with the outside world. I was really looking forward to being home everyday with my baby but it could be a lond winter.

New Here

Hi there,

new to the board wanting to join to meet some new online friends & talk about kids. He's a BIG boy and enjoys his bottles. However he's still using a SLOW nipple suited for birth to 3 months! Bottle time takes an eternity! Every so often I switch him to the faster one and I think twice he was ok...the rest of the time he choked and sputtered and cried and well you get the idea. I know it takes some getting used to but I thought as their demands increased, they were supposed to get frustrated with the SLOW FLOW? First son was breast fed until 8 months, so I didn't have this issue! Any ideas?

My daughter barely sleeps during the day

Hi everyone. This is my first time posting and joining the forums so HELLO!
My name is Jacquie and my daughter, who is 3 months, is Mackenzie Faith.
SHe sleeps well at night, anywhere from 5-7.5 hours, but during the days, I barely get anything done. She will sleep in my arms, sometimes, but even on a good day she will only sleep for maybe 20 minutes at the most. If I put her down, forget about it, she just wakes right up. Does anyone out there have any suggestions on what I can do? I do have two other children, but I honestly can't remember it ever being this hard.
