I wish I could give you some advice but I'm in the same boat.  Although both my husband and I agree that it would be best for our son if I stayed home, we know that financially we can't get ahead if I do.  I too, am having a very hard time with this and am trying to find a job that I can do from home or a part-time position.  I had always planned on going back to work until we had our second child but now that we have our son the thought of leaving him with someone tears me apart.

Has anyone out there found a solution?

I am a stay at home mom, and my solution was to run a day home, you can have up to 5 children, myself i only have 2 part time kids, plus my own, but it gives my husband and I the extra money for things we need or want.

I only recommend this, if you love kids,  not just your own, you need a lot of patience......

Make a list of all your expenses that you will have if you go back to work ie: daycare, gas to/from work and the daycare, cost of work clothes (don't forget nylons, shoes etc), cost of any lunches/coffee breaks while out at work.

For some moms, when they add all of this up, it comes close to what they earn.

I have heard quite often that once you have two children, it's easier to convince DH to let you stay home..lol.

I hope things work out for you. If you must go back to work for financial reasons-perhaps see if you could work half time, or work sometimes from home.

I think most moms have a hard time going back to work. I did but I also looked forward to the time I would be ME again and not just mommy. However, I hated my job and was very excited to leave when I did. When I was trying to figure out what I would be bringing home if I stayed longer or if I went on EI I did find that between gas, babysitter (and mine was really cheap), extra money for lunch foods (I bagged a lunch everyday) and convience suppers a few times a month plus take out on the not good days, plus the very few clothes I bought for work I brought home $30/month more then what I would by going on EI.

Now that I am going back to work again for sanity reasons, I am still having a hard time leaving but I know I need the break. I am going to be working part time at superstore, when I filled out my application I dictated that I only wanted 3 shifts. And the days I go to playgroup and scrapbooking I wouldn't be available during those times. This way I will enjoy being there, I won't be working every day for only 20 hrs a week and I still get to do the things that are important to me like raising my family and taking time for myself.

Things for SAHM to do instead of going back full time:daycare in home, cleaning lady in private homes or small businesses (older people usually need help or even moms who are working full time and DH aunt cleans a dental office 3 times a week), working midnights (my cousin did this and found it worked for them), job sharing (I have yet to see an employer do this though), data entry-telemarketing from home, home parties-tupperware, Avon, Regal, scrapbooking (a big hit here), childrens toys, adult toys (I started my own company last year which I haven't taken the time to work at), Pampered Chef, Party Light and I'm sure a thousand others. Starting your own business (we also started a custom jigsaw puzzle company-if interested our web site is www.scotiapuzzles.com great for Chirstmas gifts), there are also trades that work well at home to, estician, hair dresser (mine does it out of her house), massage therapy, book keeping, web page design. There are also other things that can bring in some income like cutting grass or shoveling sidewalks (I know it's not "womens work" but we're less likely to have a heart attack doing it), selling baked goods and crafts, selling on ebay (I've made about $400-$500 over the few years from doing this-be wary of what you buy to list though as it may not sell), yard sales, gardening (again older people or even working moms still like to look at pretty flowers), dog walking, occaisional baby sitting if a day care isn't for you. Some of these jobs may need you to use a day care or babysitter for part of the day or the day you are working but you still may come out on top, especially if family can take turns watching them for you.
