hi all,

we have 2 kids, a daughter who is almost 3 and a 14 mth old son.

we have a girl that we are considering to be our babysitter... she's 17, lives in the area, says she has a lot of experience with young children and is a trained lifeguard after school.

my question is.... how much is the going rate for a sitter these days?

thanks!

I'm in Saskatchewan.

My child care provider charges $2.50 per child per hour.  Includes a meal and two snacks. That's for an 8 hour (or so) day, five days a week.  And it's in her own home, where she also takes in other children.

For someone to come into your home, I'd expect to pay more.  For evening babysitting, I would also expect to pay more.

Check the archives here (are they still active??)...this has been discussed at some length in the past.

Does the girl have a price in mind?

I would guess that around 5-10$/hour in the GTA would be reasonable. Waaay back when I used to babysit (15 years ago-oh to be that young again..lol) $5/hr was average. I would think that with inflation that's gone up a bit since then. Do you have any neighbors that you could ask? You could always ask the girl you have in mind.

When I was a babysitter as a teen I was paid $20/day, $2.50/hr for after school care and $5/hr for evenings. And I usually took care of them in their home and normally there were 2 kids. When I looked for a sitter I found that it was $25/day with no food included, had to bring a lunch and only for 1 kid. $3-$5/hr for a few hours during the day or evening. When I was working I found a sitter who was $15/day and was willing to take them for short periods of time for $5/3hr. We have a teen who is a friend of ours and we pay her usually $10 to watch the kids (normally just Cole as Carter is more maintainence for her right now) for a few hours, no more then 3, at a time.

Hi Everyone,

We have my fiances 13 year old niece babysitting for us (our daughter is 7) and I don't know how much I should be paying her for the summer. My work hours vary, sometimes I'm at work for 3hrs or up to 9hrs. I don't want her parents to think that we are taking advantage and not paying enough. I would love some advice on what a fair hourly rate would be.

Thanks
