My daughter is now 4 months old.  Her newest trick while BF is suck, suck, suck, turn and look behind her...suck, suck, suck, turn and look behind her...then smile.

I read that at this age as they become more aware of their surroundings they start to play during feed time.  This makes it very hard to nurse discreetly.  I am not a shy person and do nurse in public but I like to be discreet so others are comfortable...a little hard when my daughter keeps showing my nipples to the whole world as she checks out the situation around her...I have never worn a nursing cape or put a blanket over Kalli while she is nursing and not sure how that would go over now that she is so used to being able to look around.

What do all you other moms who BF in public do?  Do you just chalk it up to mommyhood and ignore that you are displaying your nipples to the whole world?

Last week I was out for coffee with my boss and I had to feed Kalli, thankgoodness she didn't do it THEN!

I bf until my little fellow was 10 months old. I was like you and didn't cover up. If my breast and nipples were shown to the world most people just looked away and I wasn't bothered by the exposure. It is up to you to decide how you feel about it.

If it does bother you you could find a bathroom or quiet spot to bf. I did that a couple times when at a function. I suppose it depends on the situation and how you truly feel about it.

I never used a cover either.  I just pulled my shirt down as close to the babies head as possible so that when baby's head popped off there was lots of material over my boob to help shield it and it necessary to quickly pull over.

Hi All,

I too nurse my daughter wherever and whenever she is hungry. She is now 4 1/2 months old. I did cover up a few times when she was first born, but now that she wiggles and kicks while she is covered I just keep my shirt close to her face in case she pulls off. I wish there was a greater amount of respect for nursing mothers in public. I am a shy person and I feel like I'm doing something wrong when people stare while I am feeding my daughter. How would these gaukers like it if we nursing mothers just stared at them while they shove food in their mouths and grimice when they burp. There is no easy way to nurse discreetly in public. I mean once you put your baby to your breast people stare, even while they are covered. Some times I feel like yelling at the people who stare at me. More breastfeeding Mothers should nurse in public just so society will get used to it.

Rachelle...Mom of Anah-Liese, Aidan and Cameron.

I only very rarely nursed in public.  When I could, I took a bottle of expressed milk with me to feed the baby.  When that wasn't possible, I generally took my baby into our vehicle to feed.  If I absolutely couldn't do that, I tried to find a quiet and discreet location, because I never really got good enough at breastfeeding to do it discreetly, and certainly once my baby was older, it was even more difficult.  I did wear large shirts so that at least most of the area was covered if baby did unlatch.

I'm not against mothers breastfeeding in public.  I actually admire those who do.  It's just that I was personally uncomfortable with baring myself to anyone who was discourteous enough to look.  I'm somewhat conservative that way.  Plus, I work in a public high school in a small city, and the last thing I need is for any of the students, particularly boys, to get that particular view!

If you're comfortable with it, keep doing it.  It's legal to do anywhere that you are allowed to be, and baby needs to eat when baby is hungry!

When Kate was 6 months, I temporarily stopped bf'ing her in public, or even in front of my in-laws.  She would constantly drop the nipple to look around, and that was way more exposure than I was comfortable with!  Fortunately, Kate moved beyond that stage, and I was able to start bf'ing in public again.  I am not sure how long it took for her to get through that stage.
